Excavation of Japanese Knotweed
Japanese knotweed was identified on a residential property at 11681 228 St, Maple Ridge, posing a threat to the local ecology and future construction activities for Maple Industries Ltd (Maple Industries). To mitigate this risk, a full removal of the knotweed, covering approximately 42 m², was deemed appropriate, to reduce the amount of treatment time to eradication.
Western Weed Control (WWC) promptly began creating a management plan to commence the project as soon as possible. Present on-site were WWC’s vegetation control experts, tasked with conducting the project, along with a soil sifter, excavator, and trucks to remove the contaminated waste. The team employed a comprehensive approach to ensure eradication, involving the excavation of rhizomes (roots) up to 3 meters deep underground. To reduce the amount of contaminated waste, WWC utilized a soil sifting technique to separate rhizomes and excess materials from the soil. The excess material was carefully removed from the site via truck to a disposal facility.
The project was successfully carried out over a period of two days, with a strong focus on safety and environmental responsibility. WWC also reseeded the lawn to facilitate recovery from any damage caused by the removal process. Overall, the effective removal of the Japanese knotweed by WWC prevented future spread in the area and will allow Maple Industries to carry forth with re-zoning applications in the future if desired.
